Hi! My name is Jean Avery Hess, and I am an English teacher at Hughesville Jr./Sr. High School.  For the 2017 - 2018 school year, I am teaching 8th Grade Language Arts.

I attended grade school at Renn Elementary in East Lycoming School District, and I am a 1978 graduate of HHS. While at Hughesville I was a member of the tennis team, chorus, Student Council, and the band.  I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in English at Shippensburg University and did my graduate study at Bucknell University. This spring will mark the start of my 34th year of teaching at East Lycoming.

Throughout my teaching career at HHS, I have taught English/Language Arts at all grade levels, 7 - 12 and also spent five years as the Enrichment teacher for gifted students. In that role I was able to work with students in grades 1 - 6, as well as, at the high school level. I have been very involved with extra-curricular activities while teaching.  I was the advisor for Student Council for a long time, co-directed three school musicals, advised yearbook and the Spartan Scholars honor society, and also started and advised the Interact club at HHS. I love teaching 8th grade and having the opportunity to help my students prepare for their lives as freshmen next year.

I reside in Hughesville with my husband, Tom, also HHS class of '78, my son, Ben, who graduated from HHS in 2007, and my daughter, Abigail, a 2009 Hughesville grad. Ben graduated from Penn State University in May of 2011 with a major in Community Environmental Development, and Abigail graduated from Susquehanna University in May of 2013 with a major in Creative Writing in their honors program. Ben is currently working as an independent abstractor for a consulting firm, and Abigail is working for a publishing firm in Boston, MA.

As you can see, East Lycoming School District has played a large part in my life and in the lives of my family. We are all Spartans at heart. I am very proud to be a teacher in this district,  and I am also proud that my children were able to attend my alma mater, HHS.
