WELCOME AND THANK YOU FOR VIEWING MY WEBSITE.
I began teaching Social Studies and serving as Senior Class Advisor at the High School in 1982. I graduated from Penn College with an Associate's Degree in Education and Social Work and from Lycoming College with a B.A. in Education. I also earned a M.S. in Exceptional Persons from Mansfield University with state certification in Social Restoration. I also am a Corporal in the South Williamsport Police Department where I have served since 1981. I began my career in Education and Law Enforcement in the South Williamsport School District back in 1972. I currently have three major areas of responsibility for the East Lycoming School District.
1) I am the School/Safety Resource Officer (SRO) for the school district.
2) I am contracted by the Lycoming Career and Technology Center to teach the
Protective Services Program at our high school for students interested in
careers in Law Enforcement. Students from other school districts throughout
the area may also take this course.
3) I continue to serve every year as the Senior Class Advisor.
The overall objective of my position as the School Resource Officer is to enhance the school climate and provide for a safer school environment for both staff and students. It is my sincere hope this safer environment creates an atmosphere of security and safety for parents and the community as well. A proactive approach to school safety in both prevention and response enhances our ability to focus on our primary mission - Education. The position consists of three major components:
Educational: The primary component of the position focuses on education. I work with the faculty at primarily the high school but also on a limited basis with the elementary staff to provide law-related and safety education.
Safety: I work with all district staff to identify areas of concern that may create potential health and safety risks in our schools and find solutions to those problems.
Rapid Response to Crisis Incidents: My position as a sworn police officer for the school district with full arrest powers allows me to respond anywhere in the school district to help resolve any crisis situation if such an incident would occur.
Please contact me at rhetner@elsd.org. or phone me at the High School at 584-5111 if I can be of any assistance.
